The Weeknd is a Canadian artist whose real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye. His stage name, according to Tesfaye, comes from being a high school dropout who “left one weekend and never came home.” It’s missing that third ‘e’ only because there’s already a Canadian band known as The Weekend, so the spelling was modified to avoid copyright issues.
The Weeknd will join a list of celebrated entertainers who have performed at the Super Bowl halftime show when he takes the stage this year on Feb. 7 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
Regardless of musical taste, the show has always catered to a wide audience, incorporating everything from marching bands to New Orleans jazz, from Latin and Caribbean vibes to Motown.
Who is singing the national anthem at Super Bowl 55?
The NFL announced on Jan. 19 that the national anthem singers at Super Bowl 55 will be Eric Church and Jazmine Sullivan. The church is a highly acclaimed country artist, while Sullivan has been a fixture of R&B charts as a top-notch vocalist.
As part of the pregame festivities, there’ll also be a rendition of America the Beautiful. That’ll be sung by H.E.R., another R&B artist who’s received 13 Grammy nominations over the past three years.
U2 only performed three songs at the 2002 halftime show, but the performance was still well-received as the band paid tribute to 9/11 victims.
The tribute came during their second song “MLK.” A screen raised from the stage, projecting a scrolling list of names from those who died in the terror attack just a few months prior.

U2 also performed “Beautiful Day” and “Where the Streets Have No Name.”
At this point, everyone has seen Prince sing “Purple Rain” in the rain. Apparently, in the 40 previous years of the Super Bowl, it never rained. But maybe Prince summoned the water from the sky, who knows? It doesn’t matter if it was divine intervention or just the whims of the weather, the whole show was iconic: his stage in the shape of a symbol, the two dancers spinning around him, “All Along the Watchtower,” his classic Prince smirk.

There was dancing, light bondage, a pole routine, a horn section that was probably not playing their horns, and Bad Bunny. The 2020 show was such a fun party, it immediately became a classic, even though some people got upset and called the show “too sexual,” as if the year before a man hadn’t taken the majority of his clothes off on stage.
The show ended with Shakira and J-Lo shaking their hips triumphantly and joyously, unaware that a virus was rampaging around the world and would soon change almost every detail of life as we know it. Oh, to go back to a time when our biggest worry was if J-Lo and Shakira were too sexy for national television.
